How scoring works
PuckPool scores a hockey pool with fantasy points: every goal, assist and other counted stat by your NHL players adds points to your entry, using the pool’s Standard or Simple preset or the commissioner’s own values.
The two presets
Standard. The default. Rewards goals and assists most, and also counts shots, hits, blocked shots, power-play goals and goalie results.
Simple. Easier to follow: goals, assists and goalie results only.

A power-play goal earns its bonus on top of the points for the goal. Goals against are taken off a goalie’s total. A dash means the preset does not count that stat.
Not counted yet: power-play assists, short-handed goals, short-handed assists, game-winning goals, faceoffs won, faceoffs lost, overtime/shootout losses, goalie shutouts. Our stats provider, BALLDONTLIE, does not supply them, so they are worth 0 in every pool for now. Penalty minutes and plus/minus are worth 0 in both presets.
Worked examples
A skater’s night: one power-play goal, one assist, four shots, two hits and a blocked shot. Standard: 8.4 points. Simple: 5 points (the goal and the assist).
A goalie’s night: a win with 30 saves and two goals against. Standard: 8 points. Simple: 4 points.
Custom scoring
The commissioner can replace the preset with their own values, from −100 to +100 points per stat, for any stat PuckPool receives. Turning on new scoring recalculates every total and the standings, so the whole pool always plays by the same rules. The commissioner can also adjust an entry’s points by hand; each adjustment needs a reason and is recorded in the audit log.
Which games count
Pools run on an NHL regular season. Preseason games never count. During a game, stats are checked about every 20 seconds and the standings update when points change; points from a game in progress can still move until the game is final and the numbers are confirmed.
